In this series, I share tips and tricks that make my life in the kitchen easier.
Thanksgiving is the ultimate holiday for feasting and collecting leftovers–some may say the latter is actually the best part. After days of prepping and cooking, there’s a deeply satisfying feeling to know that containers full of festive foods will be stored and ready to eat during the lazy weekend that follows. Most dishes can easily be packed in boxes or reusable bags, but cakes and pies can be difficult–they usually end up getting clumsily wrapped with aluminum foil or plastic wrap.
To avoid that, here’s a trick I learned in culinary school: invert a lidded container, place the pie or cake onto the lid like a plate, and then cover with the body of the container. Voilà! This method not only keeps the cake/pie fresher for longer, but it makes it easier to store in the fridge and eat later.
Any vessel with a lid works. I’ve used everything from round deli containers for individual slices to square, 14-cup containers for entire cakes. The (container) world is your oyster!
FYI this trick also works well for transporting desserts too!
Do you have any kitchen tips or hacks that work wonders for you? Please share! Otherwise, happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope there are a lot of leftovers this year 😊.
