Hi all! I’m participating in a bake sale that’s part of an event organized by Bakers Against Racism. All proceeds of the bake sale will be donated to Black Mamas Matter Alliance–an organization that advocates for Black maternal health, rights, and equality. Led by Black women, BMMA’s goals are to advance policies, promote research, improve healthcare, and shift the cultural framework that surrounds maternal healthcare for Black women before, during, and after pregnancy.
As with many other facets of society, Black women have a harder time accessing and receiving quality healthcare due to racial discrimination. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black mothers are three to four times more likely than White mothers to die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. This gap in maternal health rates is a result of racial bias in health care and the general physiological stress Black women endure while navigating a systemically unjust society. If this issue and organization call out you, please consider purchasing one of my bake sale goodies, or feel free to make a donation directly to BMMA instead.
For the bake sale, I’ll be bringing back two flavors from my now-defunct granola business (yes, this is WaverlyMade granola for those of you who knew about my teeny entrepreneurial adventure!). Quantity is limited and sales will be open until Monday, June 15th.
Flavor Descriptions:
- Matcha (left): An aromatic granola inspired by a matcha mousse cake in Paris. Slightly sweet with a hint of orange, this flavor is made with matcha along with whole rolled oats, pistachios, walnuts, olive oil, honey, and a little bit of brown sugar.
Contains pistachios, walnuts, and wheat. - Lavender (right): This flavor pays homage to a fragrant lavender latte from an NYC cafe. Delicately balanced with juicy bursts of sweetness, this granola is made with dried lavender along with whole rolled oats, pistachios, walnuts, blueberries, olive oil, and honey.
Contains pistachios, walnuts, and wheat.
For those of you living in Los Angeles, pick up with be available on Saturday, June 20th between 11am and 1pm at the Triangle Park near the Howard Hughes Center. Otherwise, I’m happy to ship to those who can’t make it or those who live elsewhere at the additional cost of $4. The payment method will be Venmo.
**UPDATE! Sold out! Thank you to everyone who participated in this bake sale! The granola orders plus a few additional contributions have totaled to $1000–which will be going to Black Mamas Matter Alliance. Again, thank you to all, and I hope that in the near future issues like inequality in Black maternal health no longer exist.
